As the old saying goes, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Mizzou’s coaching staff has apparently never heard that saying, because, after years of stout defensive performances, new defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross has tinkered with the defensive line’s responsibilities with disastrous results.
Star DE Charles Harris’s dad, William Harris, has certainly noticed the change, according to KansasCity.com:
“I really haven’t seen anything different from Charles, but I’m seeing a lot different things from the coaching staff,” William Harris said. “Me and my wife, we talk about it all the time, but, if (the scheme) wasn’t broken, why try to fix it?”
After leading the SEC in tackles for loss last season, Charles Harris has only 5.5 tackles for loss this year through seven games. He’s also been held to only 3.5 sacks, a disappointing total for the projected first-round NFL Draft pick.
If the Tigers don’t cut their defensive linemen loose and let them make plays, the defense will continue to struggle in 2016.
