Houston Nutt’s second recruiting class at Ole Miss is filled with players who never panned out.

One such player is former Rebels wide receiver Patrick Patterson.

With spring practice approaching in March of 2010, Patterson found himself suspended for the second time in less than a year. Patterson missed spring practice for violating team rules.

Nutt acknowledged Patterson’s leash was short, eventually leading to his dismissal. As a true freshman in 2009, Patterson played in 12 games and caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Patterson’s potential excited coaches, but his inconsistency frustrated them.

In March of 2010, ESPN.com’s staff wrote that Patterson “torments coaches. He looks like Randy Moss on one play, then runs the wrong route, drops a key pass or doesn’t go full speed on the next few plays.”

“You saw the inconsistency this year,” Nutt told ESPN.com. “You saw the dropped balls. He hasn’t been right. He hasn’t been the same, and you want that from him. We expect a lot from him and he knows that.”

Just months later in July of 2010, Houston Nutt announced Patterson had been dismissed from the Ole Miss program. The four-star recruit then transferred to East Mississippi Community College where he was subsequently kicked off the team.

Patterson is one of many, but he tops the list of busts under Houston Nutt.
