The Ole Miss Rebels closed their spring practice season with their annual Grove Bowl inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and all eyes were on the three quarterbacks in the running to replace Bo Wallace as the team’s starter this fall.

All three signal callers — junior college transfer Chad Kelly and redshirt sophomores Devante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan — received between 16 and 19 attempts on the day, and all three had their fair shares of ups and downs in the Rebels’ split-squad scrimmage.

Kincade’s 50 percent completion rate led the pack on the day, which only indicates how little any of the three quarterbacks did to separate themselves from the others in contention. Kincade donned a white jersey in the Blue-Red scrimmage, while the other two quarterbacks wore green jerseys indicating they could not be hit. Freeze allowed defenders to hit Kincade (responsibly) likely because running is such a critical element to the redshirt sophomore’s game.

Kincade ran for 50 yards on the day at an average of 5.0 yards per carry.

Buchanan had arguably the most to gain entering the day, but he did little to capitalize on his opportunity, completing fewer than 33 percent of his passes with an interception.

Buchanan made a handful of nice throws but struggled to complete underneath routes, or to even get them past the long arms of Ole Miss’ defensive linemen. The redshirt sophomore had at least three passes batted down at the line on the day.

Kelly threw the only touchdown pass of the day among the three quarterbacks, but he completed fewer than 50 percent of his throws in the process. The JUCO transfer put his impressive arm strength on display, but was only able to connect on one explosive completion of 30 yards or more.

Tailback Jaylen Walton threw the team’s only other touchdown pass of the day, a 66-yard completion to former Washington transfer Damore’ea Stringfellow. That’s right, Jaylen Walton had as many touchdown passes on Saturday as the three quarterbacks in competition combined to throw.

Stringfellow led all receivers in yards through the air, most of which came on the trick play-connection with Walton, and tailback Eugene Brazley stepped up in the place of departed transfers Mark Dodson and I’Tavius Mathers to lead the team in rushing.
