It’s been 13 years since the premiere of “Hard Knocks” on HBO.

The behind-the-scenes-of-an-NFL-training-camp show was an instant hit in 2002. It existed for two seasons, took a hiatus until 2007 and has been a staple since.

The Houston Texans are this year’s featured team. They’re hardly the most popular team in the league. Still, around water coolers and on social media, the latest episode is primary fodder.

That’s the NFL. It’s the biggest league in the world. A college version, however, whew. Can you even imagine? Fan bases in college football are collectively insane. And that’s meant in the most positive way possible.

College football fans are an intense lot. State pride, school pride, even personal pride hang in the balance. The best rivalries in all of sports — college rivalries.

Trying to take personal bias out it, though, here’s a list of the five schools that would draw in the viewers from no matter the region of the United States.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes are the most obvious answer. With three starting quarterbacks and only one quarterback job available, watching that whole situation play out would be the best on-field entertainment any of the teams have to offer. Of course, “Hard Knocks” is barely about the on-field stuff. Thankfully, in Columbus, they have Urban Meyer. He can be obnoxious and loud, but Meyer is one of the best in the business at creating a facade that actually maybe Ohio State wouldn’t be all that good after all.

Florida State

Florida State is a given. Popular consensus is Jimbo Fisher is hands off. The Seminoles players have come under fire for nearly every transgression under the sun, it seems, while under Fisher’s watch. Imagine what the team could do without the illegalities and distractions. They’re still a top 15 preseason team, too. And with Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson taking over for Jameis Winston at quarterback, the scrutiny isn’t leaving that position any time soon.

Michigan

Maybe I was overstating. Ohio State might not be the most obvious answer. How about the rival? Jim Harbaugh is back at this alma mater and he wasted all of about two seconds before making waves. “Satellite camps” was a buzz word around the dog days of summer all because of Harbaugh’s tendency (unscroupulous nature, if you ask certain coaches) to take extra steps in recruiting. He’s brash, crass and both likeable and unlikeable at the same time. Forget what the Wolverines do on the field. Harbaugh alone makes them a top five choice.

Alabama

While it doesn’t have the intrigue it carried at this time last season, Alabama would still be a sight to behold. It never became normal seeing Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban together. It might this year, of course, but there are still questions from all corners about whether it can work long-term. Or rather, how long it can work, period. Plus, this year, the Crimson Tide have even more quarterback questions than they did last year. The season starts in less than two weeks and Saban and Kiffin still haven’t decided. Sign me up for that show.

Washington State

Just barely nudging USC from the top five, Wazzu checks in as the representative from the West. The Trojans have had issues for several seasons, but with coach Steve Sarkisian’s admission of personal trouble, it seems overly voyeuristic to watch USC that up-close. In Pullman, Washington, however, Mike Leach would probably welcome the cameras. Leach is a showman. He’s never pretended otherwise. He keeps the Cougars relevant, even if the only people outside the West Coast time zone can name the team’s running back in 2015. The comedy alone would be worth a pay-cable channel subscription.
