, a wide receiver for Elon University, died after falling out of a window of a 10-story building on Wednesday.

According to law enforcement officers, Allison’s fall came from a dorm room at the University of North Carolina. He was 21.

“Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated,” Elon athletic director Dave Blank said in a statement released by the school. “Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones.”

Authorities have not revealed what caused Allison to fall. No other details have been released about his death.

Allison had left the Elon campus on Tuesday, and did not show up for classes or practice on Wednesday. Worried teammates, friends and family had asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state.

According to the Times-News, Blank and Elon head coach Rich Skrosky informed the team of Allison’s death at the end of practice Wednesday. After that, the players and coaches walked off the practice field and into their locker room to spend time together.

“The moments after we told the kids, I won’t ever be around an emotion such as that as long as I coach,” Skrosky said. “The timing was such that we were all together, so we were able to be with one another. Emotional. Intense. It’s been tough.”

A year ago, as a sophomore, Allison was Elon’s second-leading receiver with 55 catches for 525 yards and two touchdowns. He had caught 12 passes for 123 yards in nine games this season.

“A tragic loss for our team and the school,” Skrosky said.
