We’re now 10 weeks into the college football season, and the nation’s pool of candidates for the Heisman Trophy has thinned considerably.

We have trimmed the SEC field down to three candidates, with the understanding that Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett and Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly are tremendous talents but are probably not considered Heisman Trophy candidates at this point for various reasons.

LSU RB Leonard Fournette, who was considered the nation’s overwhelming favorite to win the award, had a poor showing in a head-to-head matchup with Alabama RB Derrick Henry. How will that impact the race as November rolls along?

Let’s take a look at the body of work each has put together during the first two-plus months of the season, and consider what lies ahead for each of them during Week 11:

THE TOP TWO CANDIDATES

RB Leonard Fournette, LSU
2015 stats: 195 carries for 1,383 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns; seven catches for 58 yards in eight games.

Remaining schedule: vs. Arkansas, at Ole Miss, vs. Texas A&M

Week 11 outlook: After a seven-game stretch that would rival some of the all-time greats, Fournette seemed to be destined for the Heisman Trophy as we entered play in November. But after gaining just 31 yards on 19 carries against Alabama as the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season, that is now far less of a certainty. Compounding the blow his dismal performance had on his Heisman resume, he was upstaged by Alabama RB Derrick Henry, who ran for 210 yards and three scores. A significant argument could be made to say that Henry is the more appealing choice to voters at the time being. Fournette’s Week 11 game against Arkansas provides an opportunity to get back on track, as the Razorbacks defense ranks just 12th in the league in yards allowed and seventh in the league against the run.

RB Derrick Henry, Alabama
2015 stats: 218 carries, 1,254 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns; eight receptions for 69 receiving yards in eight games.

Remaining schedule: at Mississippi State, vs. Charleston Southern, at Auburn

Week 11 outlook: Henry saw his Heisman Trophy stock shoot through the roof with a standout performance against No. 2 LSU. His 210 yards and three rushing touchdowns surely caught the attention of voters who tuned in for one of the year’s premier college football games, and he surely swayed some voters that had been in Fournette’s corner. With Alabama now in the driver’s seat to win the SEC West, he is likely to continue to draw plenty of attention as the Crimson Tide pushes toward a playoff spot. Henry has two conference games remaining, and they are against the league’s No. 10- and No. 11-ranked teams against the run. The opportunity is there to close things out with a bang, and it starts with a trip to Mississippi State in Week 11.

THE LONGSHOT CANDIDATE

QB Dak Prescott, Mississippi State
2015 stats: 200 of 300 passing for 2,351 yards and 18 touchdowns, one interception; 86 carries for 418 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in nine games.

Remaining schedule: vs. Alabama, at Arkansas, vs. Ole Miss

Week 11 outlook: Remember when we said that Derrick Henry needed a standout performance in his Week 10 showdown with Leonard Fournette to gain some traction for his Heisman campaign? So, too, does Dak Prescott need a big-time performance compared to Henry in Week 11.  While Prescott’s statistics against the vaunted Alabama defense are important, ultimately he must win this game against the Crimson Tide to bring his name back into the forefront of the Heisman discussion. The Bulldogs, who are a two-loss SEC West team, have crept back into the Top 20 and would be back into the national conversation with a win.

INJURED, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

RB Nick Chubb, Georgia
2015 stats: 92 carries for 747 yards and seven rushing touchdowns; four catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.

2015 summary: Chubb, who was considered one of the league’s top Heisman candidates in the preseason and through the early portion of the season, suffered a season-ending knee injury at Tennessee on Oct. 10. He was on pace to potentially have an opportunity to make a trip to New York as one of the Heisman finalists. Chubb finished the season with an average of 8.1 yards per carry, and averaged scoring a touchdown once every 12 touches.

On the outside looking in: Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett; Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly; Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd; Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk; Ole Miss DL Robert Nkemdiche; Arkansas RB Alex Collins; Auburn RB Peyton Barber; Missouri LB Kentrell Brothers; Ole Miss WR Laquon Treadwell.
