Nike may be on the verge of changing high school football and the recruitment of college football athletes forever.

According to a report from CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, the athletic apparel giant has plans to launch a national 7-on-7 league.

It would begin with hubs in Atlanta, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Kansas City and Philadelphia, according to Dodd.

Some of the details Dodd’s sources provide are sure to raise some eyebrows:

Part of the new Nike initiative includes a sponsorship deal with Marriott and possibly a similar deal with an airline to transport players, according to a source.

Players would be required to pay up to at least $1,000 to participate. A team of approximately 25 players would spend their offseason practicing and playing in two tournaments.

Dodd explains that this could expand in the future to include junior high, junior varsity and other initiatives to further expand the reach of Nike’s 7-on-7 efforts.

The concern about the development of these leagues is much like that surrounding AAU basketball. The school coaches are not in control and the parents aren’t in control, which can invite some less than desirable influences from “coaches” that may have something to gain through the recruiting process for these kids. Or, at minimum, could influence the process.

Still, it has to be a great time to be a high-school football athlete. Opportunities to showcase your talents have never been more readily available.
