In the No. 10 TV market in the country, SEC football is king.

Mark Berman, sports director of KRIV FOX 26 in Houston, recently tweeted a graphic of the city’s 20 most watched college football, and 60 percent featured SEC teams.

It’s no surprise that a Texas A&M game, in this case the Oct. 17 meeting with Alabama, is on top, but it’s the Crimson Tide who truly dominate the list. Alabama appears five times – some commenters have said it should be six – including in each of the top three games (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 6 and 10). Texas A&M appears four times (Nos. 1, 8, 11 and 16) with LSU (Nos. 3 and 13) and Florida (Nos. 2 and 13) also making multiple appearances. Auburn (No. 6), Arkansas (No. 8). Tennessee (No. 10) make single appearances in the top 20.

Some Twitter users have replied to Berman saying the Alabama-Ole Miss game should have been on the graphic with a 4.7 rating in Houston. That game’s inclusion would give both teams another appearance, and bump Texas-TCU from No. 20. The Rebels are on the graphic at No. 11 for their game against Texas A&M.

Expect numbers like these, particularly the Alabama games on CBS, to be cited when the Big 12 or other conferences talk about expansion. The above list shows that just having an SEC team in Texas is enough to get many Houston viewers to watch SEC games that do not even feature the nearby Aggies. While fans might hope to restore rivalries or add a perennial powerhouse, if there’s untapped television market out there, expect that school to be at the top of the list.
