Christmas is just days away, and recruiting has slowed due to the NCAA’s month-long dead period, there’s still plenty of work — and even more wishing — to be done.

Some of the nation’s elite prep prospects have yet to commit, with many doing so just after the new year in a bevy of all-star games.

With more commitments to come down the pipe, Saturday Down South puts together the wish list of currently uncommitted prospects SEC West schools would love to have.

Big gifts under the tree

Martez Ivey: The nation’s top prospect, Ivey was almost a sure lock to stay in-state at Florida with Will Muschamp, but after his firing, Ivey’s recruitment was in full force. It is believed Auburn — where Muschamp now calls home — is making a strong play for the 6-foot-6, 270-pound offensive tackle. His last two official visits to SEC schools were to Auburn and LSU, though most recruiting analysts believe Ivey’s decision is between the Gators and Tigers. He’d be a Christmas gift sure to make even the most Grinch-like head coach happy.

Byron Cowart: The Seffner, Fla., native is being pursued heavily by both Florida and Florida State. At 6-foot-4, 250-pounds and 4.6 40-yard dash speed, Cowart is a big, athletic defensive end. Coward holds offers from LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Auburn and Alabama. Though it’s reported the only two contenders are the Gators and Seminoles, Cowart would be a big-get for any coach to cross off his Christmas list.

CeCe Jefferson: A number of SEC schools are vying for Jefferson’s services this Christmas season. Among the contenders are Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss and Georgia. The five-star defensive end has taken official visits to Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss this fall, in addition to several unofficial visits to Florida. Jefferson is expected to make his announcement during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 3.

Terry Beckner, Jr.: A favorite to head to Missouri, Beckner, Jr. is a coveted defensive end from East St. Louis, Ill. At 6-foot-4, 293-pounds, he’s rangy coming off the edge. While Gary Pinkel’s Tigers top the leaderboard, it is not known whether defensive coordinator Dave Steckel’s departure will affect his stance regarding Mizzou. Auburn and LSU also are the mix and are believed to be gaining ground in the race for Beckner, Jr.

Kendall Sheffield: A touted cornerback, the Texas native is being courted by Texas A&M and Alabama. At 6-foot, 181-pounds, Sheffield boasts 4.4 40-yard dash speed, and plays the ball really well. He’s taken unofficial visits to Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU in recent months. The Aggies are currently the favorite to get Sheffield, though you wonder how the search for a defensive coordinator will affect his recruitment.

Stocking Stuffers

Tyron Johnson: It seems almost disrespectful to refer to Johnson as a stocking stuffer, because this talented playmaker would be a huge pickup for a number SEC programs. In-state LSU is fighting off a few Big 12 schools, but Johnson seems likely to stay in the SEC. LSU, Auburn and Georgia are all in the mix for Johnson, though the New Orleans product seems like he wants to stay in-state.

Damien Harris: The Berea, Ken., native is being recruited heavily by the hometown Wildcats. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back is considering Kentucky, Alabama, Texas A&M and Arkansas, though it is believed the Razorbacks are not in the picture at this point. Harris announced he’ll make his decision on Jan. 9, and Mark Stoops hopes the in-state product stays home.

Damarkus Lodge: The Cedar Hill, Texas native is considering LSU and Ole Miss, after he decommitted from Texas A&M this fall. A 6-foot-2.5, 190-pounds, Lodge is has good size and hands on the outside. It’s believed the Bayou Bengals are the favorite to land Lodge, though Ole Miss is still in the picture. Lodge would add a good piece to any team’s receiving corps.
