Mississippi high school senior Kendall Breland made history on Friday night when she scored what’s believed to be the first touchdown scored by a female in state history.

Breland, normally a defensive tackle, said she was nervous before her first offensive snap, when she took a handoff and followed the offensive line into the end zone for the one-yard score.

Breland told The Clarion-Ledger that QB Tyquan Ulmer helped her stay calm before the play:

“Just breathe, don’t worry, you’ve practiced this all week,” Ulmer told Kendall, as she recalled. “Just take the ball and run right behind Kadarius Kennedy.”

“At that point I knew not to worry about anything,” Kendall said. “I had some big offensive linemen in front of me who were going to open up a whole.”

The historic moment wasn’t lost on Breland:

“I was so happy,” she said. “I realized the importance of it.”

To make the moment even sweeter, Breland’s team, Laurel High School, won the game 61-14 to remain undefeated.
