Former South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson, who set the Gamecocks’ single-season passing yards record last season, was promoted to San Francisco’s active roster on Saturday after the franchise moved Colin Kaepernick to injured reserve.

Signed as an undrafted free agent, the rookie signal caller was released on Sept. 5 then signed to the 49ers’ practice squad the following afternoon.

Thompson led the SEC with 3,564 yards through the air as a fifth-year senior last fall. Thompson will back up fifth-year pro and former Mizzou standout Blaine Gabbert in Kaepernick’s absence.
