On the heels of South Carolina’s most important recruiting weekend to date, it appears the Gamecocks have stopped the decommitment bleeding in this year’s class and should secure a Top 20 haul on signing day next week.

A re-energized Steve Spurrier has hit the recruiting trail hard and helped the Gamecocks stay in the mix with four-star defensive end Arden Key, flip previous Rutgers commit Blake Camper and hang onto four-star tackle Christian Pellage who is being courted by Jim McElwain and the Gators.

The Gamecocks have had eight decommitments from a class that was once ranked No. 5 in the country, but Spurrier has never pushed the panic button despite clearing up previous comments that he was nearing the end of his career.

“I think every now and then some of our recruits mess around with the media we have learned,” Spurrier told The State during the second week of January. “Hopefully, that’s all they’re doing is messing around, saying one thing and meaning another, but we’ll see. You recruit until Feb. 4 and on Feb. 4, we’ll find out what we’ve got.”
