No. 24 South Carolina (1-1, 0-1) entertains fifth-ranked Georgia (1-0) on Saturday in a crucial early-season SEC showdown in Columbia. The game’s slated for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Let’s take a look inside some of the numbers.

THE GOOD

101: Rushing yards last weekend from Mike Davis, South Carolina top offensive threat and overall best player. His eighth career 100-yard game came at an opportune time for a team in danger of an 0-2 start after dropping 12 spots in the national polls following a 24-point loss in the opener. If Davis hits triple digits and posts two more touchdowns on Saturday, the Gamecocks will be in good shape.

2: Total takeaways from the Gamecock defense against East Carolina after coming up empty vs. Texas A&M. South Carolina finished in the SEC’s top six in turnover margin each of the last three seasons (33 total wins during that span), but is even thus far through two games.

316.0: Passing yards per game from senior quarterback Dylan Thompson, putting him third in the SEC behind Kenny Hill (397.0) and Bo Wallace (353.5). Thompson’s completion percentage ranks near the bottom of the league at 57.7, a number he’ll need to improve upon for the Gamecocks to be successful this season.

THE BAD

18: Number of third downs opponents have converted into a fresh set this season. South Carolina’s third-down defense is a horrific 62.1 percent, the nation’s worst. Most of those have come through the air where the Gamecocks have struggled immensely with three new starters in the secondary.

566.5: Total yards per game the Gamecocks have given up defensively. Believed to be a strength entering the season despite substantial personnel losses, South Carolina’s front seven has shown up during the early portion with just one sack in eight quarters against a pair of pass-heavy offenses. The Gamecocks are 23-6 since Lorenzo Ward took over as the team’s defensive coordinator prior to a bowl win over Nebraska to conclude the 2011 season.

3: Explosive plays on the ground spanning 10 or more yards. South Carolina’s running game has been dominant the last several years but Davis and Brandon Wilds have yet to get on track behind a less-than-impressive performance from the veteran-heavy offensive line. Davis’ 36-yard touchdown run in last week’s game was the only carry this season than covered more than 20 yards for South Carolina ballcarriers. By comparison, Kentucky’s had seven such plays.
