North Carolina picks true freshman as starting QB ahead of Week 1 game vs. South Carolina
The North Carolina Tar Heels have had a quarterback competition during fall camp, and it now seems to be over.
Ahead of a Week 1 showdown vs. South Carolina, it appears new coach Mack Brown has decided on a winner of the three-way quarterback competition.
According to Brown, who spoke at a press conference on Sunday, the Tar Heels will go with true freshman Sam Howell as the starter:
Mack Brown says Sam Howell will start taking snaps with the Blue Team (first team). “Sam has just been more consistent than the other two.”

Howell was competing with redshirt freshmen Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder, but the true freshman got the nod at the end of the day.
Howell was a 4-star prospect coming out of high school. He was the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2019 and the No. 2 overall recruit from the state of North Carolina, per the 247Sports composite rankings.
How will South Carolina handle a true freshman quarterback in Week 1? We’ll find out in a couple of short weeks.
