Handing out grades after South Carolina’s win over South Alabama on Saturday:

OFFENSE: C

It wasn’t the Senior Day performance Steve Spurrier had hoped to see on offense after the Gamecocks turned it over four times and only had two touchdown drives that sustained 60 or more yards. Mike Davis dropped it on the turf twice, Dylan Thompson tossed an ill-advised interception and Busta Anderson had several drops along with an unsportsmanlike conduct flag that infuriated the Head Ball Coach. South Carolina fans did get a glimpse of David Williams, next season’s primary ballcarrier alongside Brandon Wilds. Williams totaled 65 yards on 12 carries and made a nifty cutback move on a 14-yard touchdown burst in the fourth quarter.

DEFENSE: B+

Sack-and-stripe fumble recovery. Four interceptions including one returned for a touchdown. South Carolina left it all on the field defensively despite being put in bad positions several times by the other side of the ball. Skai Moore flourished at linebacker, swiping two passes out of the air to thwart potential scoring drives for the Jaguars. Brison Williams gave the Gamecocks much-needed momentum in the second quarter with a 21-yard pick six, a play he sniffed out from the beginning.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B

Nick Jones’ lost fumble on a muffed punt in the fourth quarter was the single bad play, but there was a misplayed punt Pharoh Cooper coughed up as well. Elliott Fry made all three of his field goal attempts including a 47-yarder in the third quarter. Like the offense, South Carolina seemed as if it was going through the motions at times on special teams and never threatened to make a game-changing return.

COACHING: B

Execution lacked on the offensive side of the ball, but Ward’s defense seemed prepared for the second straight week. South Alabama’s two-headed quarterback plan was ineffective and the Gamecocks kept the Jaguars out of the end zone. Spurrier ended the home slate on a high note with a win, one that made South Carolina bowl eligible for the 10th time in his tenure.

OVERALL: B

The Gamecocks have looked better against non-Power 5s at home, but got to Clemson week bowl eligible. South Carolina can now shift its focus on producing its best game of the season in Death Valley on Saturday, one that would be the feather in the cap of an otherwise disappointing campaign. The Gamecocks would make themselves an attractive bowl option with three straight wins to end the regular season.
