When Lou Holtz spent six years as South Carolina’s head coach from 1999 to 2004, he had his son Skip as his offensive coordinator.

Now Holtz is retired and Skip is still going strong, serving as head coach of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, who just so happen to be the Gamecocks’ Week 4 opponent.

During a teleconference this week, Holtz said he can’t wait to see his old stomping grounds and the improvements made to the stadium, but he added that he’s there to win a game (via 247Sports):

“Very excited about this weekend and the opportunity to come back to Columbia,” Skip Holtz said. “I go back to the time we spent in Columbia as a family and have fond memories of the experience there, to have the opportunity live in South Carolina, to coach some of the fantastic players we had during our time there, great friends, great memories, and an incredible amount of respect for that program. I understand there have been some incredible improvements to the stadium and surrounding areas and I’m excited to see some of that, but at the same time this trip is about a football game.”

As for the job Will Muschamp is currently doing as the Gamecocks’ head coach, Holtz said it’s too early to make any definitive rulings, but added that he thinks the program is heading in the right direction:

“I think it’s too early to evaluate where he is right now and what he is doing as far as 2017 is concerned, but I know he does a great job in preparing,” he said. “They cross T’s, dot I’s, very thorough in what they do, very well-coached team. I’m sure he is eager for the opportunity to be in that program for five years, get his own players in there, and I’m sure it will continue to grow as long as he’s there.”

Saturday afternoon’s game in Columbia kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
