Get used to it, Coach.

You’re going to be hearing quarterback-related questions a lot this preseason.

Steve Spurrier opened up a bit following South Carolina’s first fall practice Tuesday, but didn’t name a leader in the Gamecocks’ ongoing competition under center.

Over the next few weeks, Spurrier’s hoping one of four players in contention — Connor Mitch, Lorenzo Nunez, Perry Orth and Michael Scarnecchia — can separate from the others and give the offense stability at the position.

And like he said at SEC Media Days, the Gamecocks aren’t against playing two.

“(The) quarterback battle is going on,” Spurrier said. “Like I told them, we’re charting everything. We’ve turned into a bunch of charters out there. A lot of jobs are up for grabs.”

Spurrier said South Carolina’s signal callers took equal reps during the morning session.

“Lorenzo Nunez got 1 out of 4 snaps, just as many as everybody,” Spurrier said. “He was running around, firing around and we think he’s going to be a very good player.”

Spurrier is anxious to see what kind of impact personnel changes defensively will have on this year’s team. Several newcomers who made their debuts Tuesday will challenge for roles as immediate impact players and potential starters this season.

“All the defensive coaches (y’all talked to) were really happy with the new players, a lot of these freshman and junior college kids,” Spurrier said. “It’s going to be a different defense, we all know that. What’s sort of neat is that nobody knows much about our players right now.

“It was fun to see the new guys. That’s sort of a thrilling part of coaching in college. It was good morning and we found some new ballplayers.”
