One of the most bizarre plays in the South Carolina-Florida game may have also been one of the most important.

With under four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Florida faced third-and-8. The snap went over Gators QB Feleipe Franks’ head. He was able to recover without falling to the ground, keeping the play alive. Franks scrambled and threw a pass intended for TE Kemore Gamble. The ball bounced off Gamble’s hands and WR Trevon Grimes made a catch.

Grimes was being gang tackled as the refs blew the play dead, indicating they were giving him forward progress. But as Grimes was going to the ground, the ball came out. The officials considered the play already dead before the ball was out and South Carolina picked it up.

Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp did not challenge the call on the field. He explained why in his post-game press conference.

“The whistle had blown,” Muschamp told reporters, per The State. “But they review every play in the box. We have people that are reviewing. It’s harder on the road because you don’t get the same looks. And so in that situation they’re reviewing every play, and I had communication with the official on the field that the play was being reviewed. And they didn’t stop play. If it was a question, they would’ve stopped play.”

Had the play been overturned, South Carolina would have had the ball up 31-14 with under 19 minutes remaining in the game. Instead, Florida went to score 21 unanswered points en route to a 35-31 victory.
