It might not seem like it was that long ago that Jake Bentley was just a true freshman stepping in at quarterback for South Carolina and turning the 2016 season around completely. His college career is about to enter its final season. In three years, Bentley has proven a lot, but there’s always room to improve. At Wednesday’s SEC Media Days, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp identified where Bentley needs to improve as a senior.

“We’ve got to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” Muschamp said, per The Big Spur. “All 14 interceptions weren’t on Jake.

“But we’ve got to do a better job on the red zone. We’ve got to do a better job overall. We also had over 20 drops. Some were momentum changing drops that changed the complexion of the game with a struggling defense that needed a little confidence and a little cushion.”

“I think the biggest thing that I’ve told Jake is just taking care of the football. Be more consistent with our decision making and taking care of the ball. He’s worked extremely hard in the offseason and I’m looking forward to seeing him in his senior year.”

It should come as no surprise that a longtime defensive coordinator sees turnovers as the biggest issue, but Boom has a point. Those who have watched Bentley lead the Gamecocks offense know that Bentley has the arm and the supporting cast to put points on the board. A few more possesions with positive outcomes could lead to a better record in 2019.
