Sports Illustrated’s Gabriel Baumgaertner argued why every top 20 team won’t make the College Football Playoff, including the five ranked SEC teams: No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 LSU, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 16 Georgia and No. 19 Ole Miss. In his list, Baumgaertner lists all the potential flaws facing each team and why it will knock each out of contention.

For Alabama, he noted it could struggle due to its lack of returning starters, as well as Nick Saban’s disinterest in naming a starting quarterback. Baumgaertner also mentions the possibility of replacing Heisman winner Derrick Henry with several inexperienced running backs.

Like many others, Baumgaertner claimed LSU’s biggest flaw will be inconsistency at quarterback. Brandon Harris’ slow finish is a big concern, as is whether the team will adjust to new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.

For Tennessee, his biggest concern is whether Butch Jones has “the coaching chops” to secure a playoff berth. The Vols must also overcome their 11-game losing streak to Florida and passing attack concerns before being taken seriously as a contender.

Georgia’s biggest concern will be its lack of depth in the front seven, according to Baumgaertner. Even if Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are healthy, the Bulldogs still lack depth at several positions.

Baumgaertner claimed Ole Miss will struggle against opposing rushing offenses following the departure of Robert Nkemdiche. That, however, will be its second biggest concern after a potential bowl ban from the infractions committee.
