Your team is overrated. No, your team is underrated. The one thing we know for sure is that nobody is ever possibly correctly rated at this time of year.

You say your school is going 12-0 and winning the title. Somebody else tells you they’re going 4-8. You can’t both be right. But we can explain both viewpoints.

Here (starting with the SEC East) is why your school is overrated — or why it’s underrated. Only time will tell which view was correct.

Florida

The Gators are Overrated Because: They lost more on defense than anyone in the SEC, and their offense is going to struggle regardless of who the QB is. In Jim McElwain’s two years in Gainesville, the Gators have averaged 3.5 and 3.7 yards per carry. They have allowed 74 sacks in two seasons. Even with Feleipe Franks (probably) under center, the Gators can’t block, can’t run, and will take a step back on defense. They look like the third-place team in the East.

The Gators are Underrated Because: Franks will give them a bona fide dual-threat under center, and when Will Grier was playing, Florida’s offense looked pretty good. Sure, the Gators lost a lot on defense, but their depth is better than anybody in the East except Georgia, and McElwain will outcoach Kirby Smart. Florida is the most underrated team to win two consecutive division titles, and why not make it three?

Georgia

The Bulldogs are Overrated Because: Kirby Smart is learning how to be a head coach on the job, and the rest of the SEC will continue to eat him alive. Also, despite having the most weapons in the East, Georgia scored just 24.5 points per game in 2016 (11th in the SEC, the fewest for Georgia back to the Jim Donnan Era).

The Bulldogs are Underrated Because: They kept almost all of their NFL prospects, and have the most talent in the East by a wide margin. The Bulldogs will outscore Florida and flummox Tennessee on defense. They are the one team in the East with a puncher’s shot at knocking off Alabama or the West’s top dogs.

Kentucky

The Wildcats are Overrated Because: Kentucky’s improvement to a seven-win team was the product of a healthy amount of luck. If Austin MacGinnis doesn’t hit a 51-yard kick at the horn against Mississippi State or the UK defense doesn’t force a fortunate fumble late against Louisville, Kentucky would have ended up 5-7. Also, top blocker Jon Toth and top back Boom Williams are gone.

The Wildcats are Underrated Because: Kentucky’s turnaround was fueled by a churning ball-control offense and an improving defense. Benny Snell will pick up where last year’s team left off, and with All-SEC players Mike Edwards and Jordan Jones leading the defense, Kentucky will continue to improve on that side of the ball.

Missouri

The Tigers are Overrated Because: Josh Heupel’s passing offense put up huge numbers, but it mostly did so in one-sided games and against weak competition. It’s one thing to put up 79 points on Delaware State or 61 points on Eastern Michigan. It’s another to lose in the conference by 35, 26, or 25 points, as Mizzou did to LSU, Florida, and Tennessee.

The Tigers are Underrated Because: 2016 was a season of growing pains. The team came together down the stretch, posting two impressive wins in the final three games against bowl-bound opponents. Barry Odom is catching on, and Mizzou could easily be back in a bowl in 2017.

South Carolina

The Gamecocks are Overrated Because: Even when Carolina won games, they did so by a narrow thread. The Gamecocks won six games by a total of 40 points. Those included wins over a 2-10 UMass team and a mediocre FCS Western Carolina squad (that lost to Eastern Carolina by 45). USC was literally a handful of plays from going 3-9.

The Gamecocks are Underrated Because: Their 2016 season was a year of maturation for a core group of talented young players who will lead Carolina for years to come. Jake Bentley, Rico Dowdle, Bryan Edwards, etc., will all be back and be better than they were. USC probably won six games a year ahead of schedule, which means they could win eight or nine in 2017.

Tennessee

The Vols are Overrated Because: Virtually every starring player from the 2016 team is gone. Dobbs? Gone. Kamara? Gone. Reeves-Maybin? Gone. Sutton? Gone. Barnett? Gone. You get the idea. Couple this with the fact that UT was putrid in run defense in 2016 (allowing 218.5 yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry) and there’s reason for concern.

The Vols are Underrated Because: The chemistry on the 2016 team never clicked. Partially, UT struggled through having the worst luck imaginable on injuries over the past two seasons, and partially, the guys who were supposed to be stars often just didn’t live up to their rankings. Butch Jones is making this team in his own style and image, and should finally be in position to do so.

Vanderbilt

The Commodores are Overrated Because: They absolutely backed into a six-win season. They edged Western Kentucky by a point in overtime, they caught Georgia in a lull, they got Ole Miss after the team was imploding, and they beat a Tennessee team that didn’t have enough emotional investment to beat Halls High School, much less an SEC foe. Vandy also lost Zach Cunningham, who was probably the most underrated player in the SEC, and is absolutely irreplaceable.

The Commodores are Underrated Because: Derek Mason’s fourth team will probably be the one that most bears the stamp of its coach. Vandy has struggled offensively, but they kept all-time leading rusher Ralph Webb, and Kyle Shurmur got better as the season progressed. Mason’s team has bought in, and that’s a significant intangible which will serve them well in 2017.
