Former Georgia DB Sanders Commings records first minor-league hit

Former Georgia DB Sanders Commings decided earlier this year that he was going to give up football to pursue a professional baseball career.
A fifth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, Commings appeared in two NFL games before he was waived by the team in 2015.
Now, he’s a member of the Atlanta Braves’ organization, playing for the Danville Braves, and, in only his second game, got his first hit — a double in the D-Braves’ 6-3 victory.
He told GoDanRiver.com after the game that he was relieved to have his first hit out of the way so he can focus on taking good swings at the plate:
“It was a little bit of a sigh of relief,” Commings said of his first hit. “Last game, I got two at-bats and got two [strikeouts], so I felt a little bit of pressure to get that first hit. I got a first-pitch fastball today and it dropped in for a double. It feels really good.”
Commings finished the game with two hits, so he’s definitely on track now. He also showcased his speed in center field.
The D-Braves are only the Braves’ rookie-level affiliate, so Commings, who is already 27 years old, has a lot of work to do if he wants to get anywhere near the majors.
But, if he keeps having games like he did on Monday, he could earn a call-up soon.
