A former Tennessee coordinator is coming back to the SEC.

According to a report by Jimmy Hyams, Kentucky has hired former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Jancek as a defensive consultant. Jancek previously served with Tennessee on Butch Jones’ staff.

Jancek most recently served as the safeties coach at the University of South Florida under head coach Willie Taggart.

Jancek served as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator from 2013-2015. He helped turn around a defense that had become a major disappointment in the minds of many Vols fans.

It was announced after the 2015 season that Jancek and Jones mutually agreed to part ways despite a strong showing from the defense. Jancek’s defense in 2015 ranked 16th nationally in points allowed per game. Unfortunately it was the defense that received the blame for many blown leads that season that led to his departing the program.

It also does not appear that the decision to leave Tennessee was entirely mutual. Jancek once tweeted out his excitement when Tennessee was upset by South Carolina this past season.

His consultant job will not have any on-field duties, but it will be interesting to see what this hiring adds to the Kentucky-Tennessee rivalry.
