Though the Georgia Bulldogs are off to a 3-0 start, they’ve done so without starting QB Jacob Eason, who was injured in Week 1’s win over Appalachian State.

Meanwhile, freshman QB Jake Fromm has stepped in and performed well, guiding the Dawgs to wins over Notre Dame and Samford.

As Eason gradually works his way back into action, it’s fair to say the Bulldogs have a quarterback controversy on their hands.

On Tuesday, coach Kirby Smart was asked whether Eason will resume his starting position once he’s healthy, but he wasn’t ready to answer that question (via Macon.com):

“It’s a decision we’ll make when (Eason’s) health improves,” Smart said.

Smart said there are a number of factors that will go into whether Eason returns as the starter or not, including how Fromm handles his first SEC game on Saturday night:

“I think a lot of that is determined by how Fromm is playing,” Smart said. “We’ll make that decision when the time comes. We’ll make that decision when the time comes. It’s not like we’re going to sit here and make an ultimatum. It’s going to come as his health improves.”

As the Bulldogs prepare to host Mississippi State on Saturday night, the pressure is on the true freshman to hold onto his job. If not, Eason could soon make his return.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. Eastern time and can be seen on ESPN.
