Texas A&M and Texas haven’t met since 2011, and neither program has the coach that led the program that season. In fact, Texas is on its second coach since Mack Brown.

Recently, there appears to be a groundswell of support to rekindle the rivalry. In September, students at Texas voted to bring the rivalry back, and Longhorns coach Tom Herman said he supported it.

The trouble is, both teams have largely filled their non-conference schedules for several years out.

“Any time the student body rallies around a cause, I think the powers that be listen,” Herman said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “Now, the powers that be are in that position because they have to make decisions.”

Given that predicament, one fan asked Austin American-Satesman writer Brian Davis about a bowl possibility. Davis said that Texas officials at least don’t want to bring the rivalry back in that way.

There are SEC ties to the Texas Bowl. A&M played in the bowl last season, a loss to Kansas State, and Arkansas beat Texas in it in 2014.
