Believe it or not, Nick Saban turned out to be a pretty good coach.

Of course there were plenty of LSU fans who knew that much when he led the program to a national title in 2003. And of course there were plenty of Tiger fans who were sad to see him leave for the Miami Dolphins after the 2004 season. Saban’s return to the SEC in 2007 fueled the last 5 of his 6 national titles.

During Alabama’s visit to the White House to celebrate the program’s 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship on Tuesday, President Donald Trump apparently couldn’t believe that Saban won a national title before Alabama.

That led to this exchange:

LSU fans would argue that Saban wasn’t “let go” by the program. Others might argue that the Tigers should’ve written Saban a blank check to stay in Baton Rouge.

Either way, Saban definitely wasn’t fired at LSU. And actually, he left Miami to come back to the SEC.

Five national titles later, Alabama fans are glad that Saban landed in Tuscaloosa.
