One of the never-ending debates of college football is scheduling. When is enough, well, enough? Some are dissatisfied with the SEC’s eight-game league schedule. Honestly, given what a tough league it is, a seven-game league slate would not be unreasonable. But some call for a ninth league game. If that were suddenly approved, what seven additional cross-division games would be added to the schedule?

We wanted to be fair, but also compelling, which is why we called for:

1. Alabama vs. Georgia

C’mon, it was the national title game. Could we get too much of the league’s two premier programs facing off? Granted, it means that between this game and Georgia’s scheduled tilt with Auburn, it almost guarantees that the SEC title game would be a rematch. But frankly, so what? We’d be down with this.

2. Auburn vs. Florida

Auburn versus Dan Mullen is an intriguing matchup. The year before Mullen went to Mississippi State, Auburn won a classic 3-2 affair against the Bulldogs. No, that wasn’t a baseball score that popped up in the wrong spot. But in his nine years in Starkville, Mullen beat Auburn three times and on three other occasions, lost the game by a single score. This would be a potential shot across the bow for the East in a division rivalry, and would doubtlessly be better than watching Auburn snooze through a game with, say, Liberty.

3. LSU vs. South Carolina

The Rodney Dangerfields of the SEC are trying to break in new offensive coordinators, and both will feature fearsome defenses. This might not be a marquee game, but it’d be much more entertaining than say, Carolina vs. UT-Chattanooga or LSU vs. Rice, both of which will take place on Nov. 17.

4. Texas A&M vs. Tennessee

Two anticipated new head coaches colliding also would be a rematch of one of 2016’s best SEC games, when on Oct. 8, a still undefeated No. 8 A&M slipped past the previously undefeated No. 9 Vols in double overtime, 45-38. If the rematch was half as good of a game, it alone would justify a ninth conference game.

5. Ole Miss vs. Missouri

Why not? Jordan Ta’amu and Drew Lock might each throw for 500 yards if these two teams played. Seriously, these were the SEC’s two top passing offenses in 2017 … and it wasn’t even close. The third-place finisher was almost 70 yards per game behind Mizzou. How could you not enjoy this game?

6. Arkansas vs. Kentucky

Sure, we’re stretching a bit at the bottom of the SEC talent pool. But hey, this would be worth it just to remember the epic seven-overtime game in 2003 when Kentucky’s now down-sizing lefty Jared Lorenzen did everything except stop Arkansas from scoring one more time than he did. UK lost that one 71-63, but the Cats do hold the all-time series lead 4-3.

7. Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt

I’d love to say there was a football reason for this game coming down to these two teams. Two of the league’s most underrated QBs would give the game some entertainment value.  Also, State hasn’t visited Nashville since 2009, and there’s a lot more hot chicken restaurants open now than there were back then. Hey, good enough reason for me. And Connor O’Gara is buying if Vandy pulls the upset.
