Former 4-star Mississippi State QB signee returning to college football after 6-year baseball career
Back in 2013, Florida native Cord Sandberg was the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the country, drawing interest from a number of teams before ultimately signing with Mississippi State.
However, the 4-star recruit was also an elite baseball prospect, and was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round of the 2013 MLB Draft.
Six seasons later, though, Sandberg has yet to make it beyond the double-A level, and has now announced he’ll be returning to college football:
I want to thank the @Phillies for allowing me to chase a dream of mine for the last 6 seasons, but it’s time to chase another one. pic.twitter.com/TsFAiK2r3F

This is a similar path that former Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden followed, and he became a star for the Cowboys. In fact, he eventually became a first-round pick.
South Carolina TE Hayden Hurst is the most-recent success story, becoming a first-round pick in 2018 after a pro baseball career (albeit one shorter than Sandberg’s).
It will certainly be interesting to see where Sandberg ends up, but since he was so closely recruited by SEC teams back in 2013, there could be some interest from the conference again this year.
