Tennessee stormed out to a 44-19 lead over Iowa in the first half of Sunday’s second-round NCAA Tournament game in Cincinnati and it looked like the rout was on.

However, they don’t call it March Madness for nothing, and with just under three minutes remaining in the second half, the Hawkeyes had closed the gap to 65-64 and it looked like the Vols may choke away the big lead. It was soon tied 67-67 after a Hawkeye shooter was fouled on a three-point shot, but Lamonte Turner atoned for his foul and hit a clutch three on the next possession.

Still, the Vols and Hawkeyes couldn’t settle things on the court in 40 minutes, so it was off to overtime. That’s where Grant Williams and the Vols took over. By the time that overtime period was over, the score was 83-77 in favor of the Vols.

Williams and Admiral Schofield both had 19 points to lead the Vols, with Lamonte Turner adding 15 points and Jordan Bone scoring 14. Williams also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists for his team.

Rick Barnes won’t be happy with the Iowa comeback effort, but the important thing is the Vols survived and advanced.

Now, Tennessee is off to the Sweet 16, where they’ll take on a tough Purdue squad in Louisville. That will be a relatively easy trip for both fanbases, so it’ll be interesting to see what the crowd is like.

This year’s group of Vols isn’t ready for their great run to end, so we’ll see what happens in Louisville. Could a Final Four run be in the works?
