The Auburn QB race is down to two players: Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix. That prompted dual-threat backup Malik Willis to transfer from the university.

Willis was in the running for the starting job this spring, but Gus Malzahn narrowed the job down to Gatewood and Nix following spring practice. Willis has decided to try his luck elsewhere, and you certainly can’t blame him.

Malzahn was asked about Willis’ transfer at the SEC Spring Meetings, and he offered a little more than the normal Malzahn coach-speak.

“First of all, Malik is a wonderful human being,” Malzahn said, via AL.com. “We’ll be rooting for Malik to find the right situation for him. But like I said, he was a blessing to coach, and we’ll be rooting for him.”

During his Auburn career, Willis rushed for 309 yards and recorded just 69 yards passing on 14 attempts.

Willis entered Auburn rated a 3-star prospect and was ranked as the nation’s No. 21 overall athlete and the No. 35 overall prospect in the state of Georgia, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

It is still unknown where the Atlanta native will play next.
