South Carolina players are like most sports fans around Columbia, and college football fans around the country. They hear the criticism directed at coach Will Muschamp following the team’s latest losses to Tennessee and Florida, which followed the Georgia upset and the 1-3 start.

OL Donell Stanley and LB Ernest Jones both came to Muschamp’s defense on Tuesday while speaking with reporters ahead of the Gamecocks’ game with Vanderbilt on Saturday.

“I’ve got all the faith in the world with Coach Muschamp,” Stanley told reporters, including Julia Morris of WYFF-4. “He puts us in situations to be successful, and he’s a guy that does anything anybody asked him, and everything. He’s a good guy to me and I trust what he’s doing. I like how he’s developed me as a player.”

Muschamp was on the hot seat following the slow start, including the loss to North Carolina and Missouri, as fans promoted his buyout and called for Athletics Director Ray Tanner to make a change. But that talk disappeared for the most part following the win at Georgia. The Florida game was most remembered for the officiating controversies, but the Tennessee loss was another reminder of a blown second-half lead, something the Gamecocks have seen happen three times this season.

Jones said the players should shoulder more of the blame.

“People talk about how he’s unfit for the job, they just don’t personally know him and everything that he does to get us prepared,” Jones said. “I believe more so the problems we have in games comes down to us. They teach us the right stuff, they show us the right stuff. It’s just a matter of the fact of just doing your job. That’s what I preach, and I’m going to continue to preach it. Because at times we have the ability to not want to do our job, and want to try to make too many plays at once. One play at a time, make your play, and good things will come out of that.”
