Just about every year, Gus Malzahn is either on the hot seat or receiving an extension from Auburn. This season appears to be different, but despite no contract extension imminent, the Auburn athletic director Allen Greene offered his support for Malzahn.

“We’ve had one of the toughest schedules in the country,” Greene said Friday outside an Auburn University Board of Trustees meeting according to 247Sports. “We’ve been competitive in every one of those games. Our focus right now is on Samford, on Alabama in the Iron Bowl and recruiting. Our whole focus right now is finishing out the season on a strong and high note, and then focusing on reloading for next year.”

Auburn is 60-30 in seven seasons under Malzahn, and the Tigers have suffered at least three losses or more for six straight seasons. If Auburn loses to Alabama next week, that will be six consecutive years of at least four losses each season.

Malzahn received a $49 million extension after sweeping Georgia and Alabama in 2017, but since the end of that regular season, Auburn is 0-4 versus its two biggest rivals. Auburn is also 0-3 against LSU the last three years.

However, Auburn has had a very tough slate this season. The Tigers have faced five ranked opponents, including four in the Top 11 of the latest College Football Playoff rankings. Auburn did beat Oregon at the beginning of the season, and the Ducks still have a chance to make the College Football Playoffs.

Malzahn is also 2-4 in bowl games while at Auburn.
