Former Gators 1st-round NFL Draft pick Matt Elam is left looking for a new pro football team.

The D.C. Defenders announced that they have waived Elam in order to sign defensive back Joshua Jenkins. Jenkins was essentially on the practice squad and eligible to be signed by an XFL team.

The bigger news is obviously Elam, who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 32 pick overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. Elam played for the Gators under Will Muschamp from 2010-12, and he was a starter almost immediately. In 3-career seasons, Elam racked up 176 total tackles, including 5 sacks and 6 INTs as a safety. During his final season in 2012, Elam was a first-team All-American and was a semifinalist for both the Thorpe Award and the Bednarik Award.

After a promising rookie season with the Ravens in 2013, Elam had a disappointing second year and eventually went on injured reserve his third year in 2016. He was arrested in February 2017, and the Ravens announced they had moved on from Elam.

He eventually signed with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in July of 2018, but he was released the following spring.
