The Miami Dolphins selected former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and will count on him being the face of the franchise for years to come.

However, how much of a rush should there be to get Tua on the field, especially after the devastating hip injury he suffered in 2019?

According to ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr., if he were running the Dolphins, Tua wouldn’t see the field at all in 2020. Here’s what he said during an appearance on NFL Live (via 247Sports):

“I said from the get go, I would sit Tua,” Kiper said. “He would not take a snap in a regular-season game. Let his body heal, medically redshirt him. People say, ‘well anybody can get hurt.’ This Miami line is being rebuilt, restricted. Austin Jackson, the first-rounder is a developmental left tackle. I love Robert Hunt and I think they’ve got some guys up front that can do it, but develop that line before you put Tua out there.”

The Dolphins have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen on the roster still, so Tua could indeed be given time to fully heal.

We’ll see starting this summer and fall what the team’s plans are for the new star quarterback.
