Does playing in a big ballpark have its advantages when it comes to the College World Series? The ballpark in Omaha isn’t as small as Tennessee’s field, and that may have hurt the Vols on Tuesday afternoon.

Tennessee found itself in an elimination game against Texas. Tennessee lost its College World Series opener to Virginia, while the Longhorns fell to Mississippi State.

The Vols jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Longhorns battled back to take a 4-2 lead. Then, Tennessee added 2 more runs in the top of the fourth inning, making it 4-4. But, then the Longhorns answered again, scoring 3 in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 7-4 and then adding another run to push the score to 8-4 in the sixth.

Here’s Texas’s 3-run bomb in the bottom of the second inning:

Tennessee assistant coach Ross Kivett was kicked out of the game for arguing balls and strikes, but he got his money’s worth in the argument:

At the end of the day, though, the Vols couldn’t rally a comeback, falling to the Longhorns 8-4.

Now, Texas survives to play another game. Meanwhile, the Vols’ season is over. What a season it was. Now, the Vols will see if head coach Tony Vitello stays in Knoxville for another season.
