Kirby Smart has reportedly acted fast in finding a fill-in for absent special teams coordinator Scott Cochran. According to Dawgs247, Will Muschamp has been promoted to an on-field coaching role. It is not clear if Muschamp will coach special teams or if Smart will do staff shuffling with Muschamp working with another position group.

Smart announced in February that Muschamp had joined the UGA staff in an off-field role. The former South Carolina and Florida head coach goes way back with Smart. The two were UGA teammates and coached together at Valdosta State and then on Nick Saban’s LSU staff. Muschamp would later add to his coaching resume as defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas.

Back in the spring, Smart explained Muschamp’s role in practice.

“He’s probably the guy I lean on the most in terms of coaching the coaches and drill selection, and, ‘Hey, how did you do this,’” Smart said. ‘”Did y’all do this period first, that period first. Trying to find new ways to make our program better. I like a lot having him out there and having him in the meetings because it’s not the skillset of coaching. He’s certainly a confident coach and very competent. But it’s a lot more for me, I know he’s done things a lot of different ways, and when you’re out there and you’re in-between drills or a drill’s going on, you can walk over there and say, ‘How did y’all do this, is there a better way? What do you think about this? It’s helpful. It certainly breeds confidence and gives you more ways to do things.”
