The Pac-12 will be staying the Pac-12 for now.

On Thursday, the Pac-12 Conference issued a statement announcing that it won’t be expanding at this time. But it appears it was something it at least considered, as the conference held “extensive internal discussion and analysis.”

However, that led the Pac-12 to decide to stay put in its current state. Here’s the full statement from the conference:

This announcement came 2 days after the Pac-12 joined forces with the ACC and the Big Ten to form The Alliance. The trio of conferences plans to collaborate and align their views regarding some of the major topics in college football.

It’s unknown what will happen with the Big 12, which is losing two schools when Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC. If the Pac-12 had decided to expand, it’s possible it could have welcomed in programs from the Big 12. But that’s no longer a possibility right now.

This wasn’t the first time that expansion was on the table for the Pac-12, which was known as the Pac-8 from 1968-78 and the Pac-10 from 1978-2011.

But for the past decade, the Pac-12 has featured a dozen schools. Perhaps that changes in the future, but not right now.
