Matt Corral is one of the best college quarterbacks in the country, a Heisman Trophy candidate and the leader of Ole Miss’ offense. Without him, the Rebels likely wouldn’t be having so much offensive success this season.

That’s why it’s a concern that Corral could potentially miss Saturday’s game against LSU after he was roughed up in last week’s win at Tennessee. If Corral doesn’t play, Ole Miss would have to rely on true freshman Luke Altmyer.

On Friday, Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin updated Corral’s status during an appearance on “The Paul Finebaum Show.”

“We’re hopeful he plays, just like all of our players that are injured,” Kiffin said on the show. “So if he doesn’t, we’ll be ready and have a good plan for him not playing and make the most of this great atmosphere that we’re going to have and find a way to win. I always expect our injured guys to play, but we definitely have a plan without him, and Luke Altmyer has done some really good things in practice this week and is ready to go.”

Kiffin also discussed the status of LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, who won’t be returning to the Tigers in 2022. However, Orgeron is still coaching the rest of this season, so he’ll be on the opposing sideline when Ole Miss and LSU face off in Oxford on Saturday.

Kiffin and Orgeron were both assistant coaches at USC from 2001-04, and then again from 2010-13, so they have a long history.

“It’s unfortunate, it’s the business that we’re in, now more than ever,” Kiffin said. “It’s not what have you done a few years ago, it’s what you did last week. So Ed has done a great job, I love Ed. Known him since I was 23 and coach at USC and taught me a ton in recruiting, passion for coaching and is a phenomenal coach and has done a great job with a lot of players for a long time.”

Ole Miss and LSU are set to kick off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
