Kevin Steele reportedly lands new defensive coaching position on Big Ten program's staff
Kevin Steele will be coaching again after a season away from college football. College football insider Chris Low of ESPN reports that Steele will coach Maryland’s defense on Mike Locksley’s staff.
Low shared the news on Twitter.
Mike Locksley and @TerpsFootball are finalizing a deal to bring in veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to run the Terps’ defense, sources tell ESPN. Steele has worked for some of the biggest names in the sport, and he and Locksley have a longstanding relationship.

Steele, 63, has been in coaching since 1980. He got his start at Tennessee, his alma mater, as a student assistant and quickly worked his way up to coaching UT’s outside linebackers in 1982. Steele returned to Tennessee in 1987 for a 2-season stint coaching defensive backs. He was briefly on the Tennessee staff again in 2021 as an assistant for Jeremy Pruitt and then the interim head coach between Pruitt’s firing and Josh Heupel’s hiring.
Steele was Baylor’s head coach from 1999-to-2002, going 9-36. In recent years, he’s been a defensive coordinator at Alabama (2007), LSU (2015) and Auburn (2016-20). Steele also worked at Alabama in 2008, 2013 and ’14 in non-coordinator positions.
