Spencer Rattler has received high marks so far in his short time at South Carolina, but the Gamecocks haven’t yet named a starting quarterback.

At a press conference on Tuesday, coach Shane Beamer said Rattler is taking all the reps with the first team, but South Carolina hasn’t officially named a starting quarterback. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said last week a decision on that would come sooner than later.

“Luke’s getting more and more cleared to do everything,” Beamer said. “And the more and more he can do the better. Colton (Gauthier) is doing a great job, Braden (Davis) all those guys. We’re certainly on track and on pace to be where we need to be.”

Beamer also clarified that TE Jaheim Bell, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, is not necessarily out for the rest of spring practice.

Knowing the Gamecocks will receive more attention entering the season, Beamer said, “We do have to handle success better. We talked about it in a team meeting this morning. We started out 2-0. Then we went 2-2, and then from that point on, we never won more than 2 in a row, and we never lost more than 2 in a row. There’s some positives in that, that you never lost 2 in a row. … But also being able to handle that success when you have a great win over whoever it may be, Florida, being able to handle that success and perform better the following week.”

Beamer himself then brought up the fact that the Gamecocks will likely be ranked in the preseason. But he fired back that there will still be “about 8 opponents” ranked above them.

“Let’s keep this in perspective also, which is true,” Beamer said.
