Kirby Smart is well aware of the frequency of Georgia football players running into trouble off the field, especially as it pertains to speeding and vehicle-related offenses.

In the past year, 4 Georgia players have been arrested on driving-related charges. This includes the tragic events that occurred prior to the deaths of Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and staffer Chandler LeCroy. Jalen Carter pleaded no-contest to misdemeanor charges stemming from racing the pair prior to the fatal crash.

Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Jamon Dumas-Johnson and De’Nylon Morrissette were all involved in driving-related incidents within the past year as well.

On Tuesday at the SEC meetings in Destin, Smart addressed the concerning rise of arrests within the Georgia football program, insisting that action is indeed being taken.

“Everybody wants to know what the punishment is. Well, the players know what the punishment is,” Smart said, via Seth Emerson of The Athletic. “And that’s important for our guys to acknowledge that and understand it. But I want to educate further, I want to make sure they understand.”

Smart is not solely focused on speeding, however. He told reporters he and the Georgia program are taking steps towards educating athletes in efforts to cut down on off the field issues.

“It’s not just about (speeding),” Smart said. “It’s about everything that they can get into, in terms of gambling, drugs and alcohol, treatment of the opposite sex. We have a ton of speakers during our summer circuit program. We’ve ramped that up. But we’ll do all we can to curtail (speeding).”

Despite the uptick in off the field issues, Smart defended his program Tuesday as well.

“Do we have perfect young men and women and players? Not necessarily. But I promise you this, that’s the intent … for us to grow these guys and get them better. And I feel really good about the culture within our program.”
