Kenny Hill went from “Trill” to nil in a flash, and he’s apparently decided he’s done at Texas A&M.

According to a report from ESPN’s Travis Haney early Friday morning, Hill has asked for his release from the Aggies and will transfer. Haney’s report indicated that TCU is a strong possibility for Hill, who hails from the Dallas area.

The transfer marks the end of Hill’s whirlwind two years at Texas A&M. After backing up Johnny Manziel as a freshman, Hill won the starting job in preseason and shot to national stardom in his debut, when he set a school passing record in the Aggies’ season-opening win over South Carolina with 511 yards. That game shot the Aggies up into the top 10, drawing national attention. Hill’s momentum was so strong that his family filed for trademark of his “Kenny Trill” nickname.

Hill continued to light it up in non-conference play, throwing for 17 touchdowns against just two interceptions while leading the SEC in passing yards during Texas A&M’s 5-0 start. He began to struggle when the Aggies hit their SEC West schedule and faced increased defensive pressure. Hill’s season hit bottom in Texas A&M’s 59-0 loss to Alabama. After that game, Kevin Sumlin opened up competition at several positions, including quarterback.

Hill was beaten out by freshman Kyle Allen for the starting position, which many had expected would happen in preseason. Sumlin announced shortly before Allen’s first start that Hill was suspended two games for a violation of team rules. It was Hill’s second suspension of 2014 after he was suspended during spring after an arrest for public intoxication. Hill did not play another snap for the Aggies, and apparently will not be playing for them again.

The decision to transfer comes as no surprise, as there was speculation Hill would look into leaving Texas A&M throughout the season. Allen, the player Hill lost his job to, was the top quarterback recruit in the country in 2014 and he showed plenty of promise in his five starts to end the season, earning MVP honors in Texas A&M’s Liberty Bowl win. Additionally, the Aggies are bringing in another five-star recruit in the fall, Allen, Tex. native Kyler Murray.

Hill and Allen were expected to compete in spring practice, adding Murray to the mix during preseason workouts. Now, Allen will be the only experienced passer on the roster going into 2015. Allen’s backup during spring practices will be former walk-on Connor McQueen, who was put on scholarship last year.

If Hill does transfer closer to home to TCU, it makes for a good fit. He will sit out the 2015 season as a transfer behind Trevone Boykin, who finished fourth in Heisman voting this year as a junior. Hill would have two years of eligibility left after sitting out a year, presumably taking over for Boykin after his transfer year.
