It isn’t often that Alabama loses commitments — especially at a position of need.

However, this scenario unfolded on Sunday for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. Kicker Brandon Ruiz decided to renege on his pledge to Alabama. The Arizona native announced the decision on Twitter:

Ruiz — an Army All-American — had first committed to the program on June 10. It appears as if Arizona State could be the beneficiary of this decision.

This is a curious decision for Ruiz. With Adam Griffith graduating, Ruiz may have been able to garner a starting spot as a true freshman.

As it currently stands, there’s only one place-kicker (Andy Pappanastos) on the roster. Pappanastos will be a redshirt senior in 2017, and had transferred to the university from Ole Miss in 2015.
