AJ McCarron is being released by the St. Louis Battlehawks ahead of the 2025 UFL season, according to a report.

That news was first shared by Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Friday afternoon. This would make McCarron a free agent going into the 2025 campaign.

McCarron has been a big part of the Battlehawks franchise over the past 2 seasons. In 2024, he completed over 64% of his passes for 1,582 yards, 15 touchdowns and 4 interceptions across 9 games for St. Louis.

In 2023, McCarron threw for 2,150 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Battlehawks. McCarron is the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. The Battlehawks made the playoffs with McCarron leading the way in 2024, but lost to San Antonio in the conference finals.

It’s unclear at this time whether McCarron will continue to pursue his professional career. The former Alabama quarterback has not played in the NFL since 2023 when he appeared in 2 games for the Cincinnati Bengals. Prior to that experience, McCarron hadn’t thrown a pass in the NFL since the 2020 campaign.

The 2025 UFL season begins the weekend of March 28.
