The past two years, the Alabama Crimson Tide have had the unenviable task of taking on QB Deshaun Watson when they’ve faced Clemson in the national championship game.

This time around, though, as the two teams meet in the Sugar Bowl in the College Football Playoff semifinals, the Tigers have a new quarterback — Kelly Bryant.

Bryant is similar to Watson in a lot of ways, but it’s too soon to start comparing him to one of the best quarterbacks in college football history. Alabama DB Anthony Averett called Watson the best player he’s ever faced, but added that Bryant does a lot of nice things himself (via 247Sports):

He said Kelly is “faster in my opinion. He gets the ball out when he throws. He probably does some similar things as Deshaun Watson and he has been consistent for them. We’re going to respect him just like Deshaun Watson. We want to approach the game as normal, like we do against anyone else.

“I think this game just comes down to execution. We just have to execute. We know what they’re going to do. We play them a lot. Of course, they’ll adjust and do some little different things, just like we will. We probably know what’s coming. We just have to execute.”

Indeed, stopping Bryant will be the key to Alabama’s success on New Year’s Day. Fortunately, they practice against a very similar quarterback every single day in Crimson Tide starter Jalen Hurts.

Even as Alabama continues to suffer injuries on the defensive side of the ball, it’s safe to assume coach Nick Saban will have the Tide ready to give the Tigers a battle.
