Sad news to pass along.

According to reports by WBRZ and The Advocate, Alabama fan Robert Bowers passed away in University Medical Center Tuesday after being beaten in a bar fight early Sunday morning in Tangipahoa Parish. Bowers’ Alabama fandom is believed to have started a verbal argument which led to the fight, though police have not yet confirmed that detail.

The report states that police were called to the Ponchatoula Pub early Sunday morning regarding a bar fight with injuries. Police said Bowers suffered serious injuries after being knocked unconscious by two men. A volunteer firefighter reportedly provided medical attention until an ambulance showed up to take Bowers to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was later moved to University Medical Center.

Two men, 27-year-old Azia Crockett and 24-year-old Ryan Anthony, turned themselves in to police and have been arrested and booked on felony manslaughter charges in connection to Bowers’ death. The fight reportedly began after Bowers’ niece was escorted out of the bar by a bouncer.

“Anthony struck Bowers in the head, knocked him unconscious,” Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson told The Advocate. “He went to the ground and Azia Crockett punched him multiple times, as well.”

Bowers was 46.
