Alabama football: Stock report after Week 6

The college football world can breathe a sigh of relief; order has been restored. At least, order has been restored in the most important division of the most important conference in America. Alabama’s 26-20 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday at Kyle Field restored the Tide to their rightful place atop the SEC West standings.

We’ve been treated to a wacky road that promised anything could happen leading up to this point. But when it came right down to it, nothing had changed. Alabama and head coach Nick Saban bided their time, shrugged off the noise and the opposition and woke up on Sunday all alone above the rest in the SEC West.

Player of the Week: Jalen Milroe

The Alabama QB turned in a career day. He threw for a career-high 321 yards and tied a career high with 3 TD passes. Poised in the pocket, even in the midst of an onrushing Aggies defense, Milroe completed 21 of 32 passes.

He played like a veteran, shaking off 6 sacks and 3 more QB hurries to lead the Tide on consecutive 3rd-quarter scoring drives that made the difference in the game. He never wavered, and he continues to mature into the quarterback the Tide needs to continue their march to Atlanta.

Freshman of the Week: Caleb Downs

The 6-0, 203-pound DB from Hoschton, Ga., continues to be the Tide’s leading tackler. On Saturday, he posted 7 total tackles, including 5 solo, to bring his season total to 47. In addition, Downs added his 2nd interception of the season.

Biggest surprise: Jermaine Burton

It wasn’t a surprise that Burton was Alabama’s leading receiver for the game. What was surprising was his career-best game. As Milroe enjoyed a career day passing, his favorite target, Burton, equally benefited.

Burton compiled career highs in receptions (9) and receiving yards (197) and tied his career best with 2 TDs. His scoring plays, both in the 3rd quarter, erased a 17-10 halftime deficit and gave the Tide the lead for good at 24-17.

Biggest concern: Run game

What happened to the Bama running game? It was nonexistent. Texas A&M made the Tide’s offense one-dimensional. That usually spells defeat, but MIlroe was able to move the ball through the air just enough to put the necessary points on the board.

The Tide rushed for a season-low 23 yards on 26 attempts. Of course, that includes 6 QB sacks for minus-43 yards. Still, the Tide had not been held under 100 rushing yards since being held to 30 by Georgia in the 2021 National Championship Game.

Developing trend: Just like old times

The Tide is developing into the dominant team of old. Alabama is becoming the class of the SEC West.

After a rough and slow start, this Alabama team is molding into Saban teams we’re used to seeing. It’s a trend many questioned we would see from this squad. But as the weeks go on and the team gets more and more experience under their belts, it is becoming another in the long line of Bama winners.

Key stat: 321 passing yards

As mentioned, a career day for Milroe. He was the difference in a game where Alabama simply could not run the football. Fortunately, Milroe was on target with his passes. Over his final 23 pass attempts, Milroe did not throw consecutive incompletions. He completed 17 of those final throws for 209 yards.

First impression about Week 7: Homecoming with the Hogs

It’s Homecoming for Alabama next Saturday, when they welcome Arkansas to Bryant-Denny. Containing Razorbacks QB KJ Jefferson will be the focus for a defense that limited Texas A&M to 67 rushing yards.

The Tide have won 16 consecutive games vs. the Hogs in this lopsided series, with only 4 of those games being 1-possession victories. The Tide has won by an average of 26 points during that stretch. They haven’t lost to Arkansas in Tuscaloosa since 2003.
