Inside the Numbers: Alabama looking to bounce back

Alabama is coming off a late-game collapse against Ole Miss a week ago, and they have no time to relax. Arkansas is upset-hungry and has the running game to give anyone headaches. Take a look at some of the interesting numbers behind this matchup.

THE GOOD

  • 167.8. After getting beaten by Bo Wallace’s arm a week ago, Alabama probably own’t have to worry about that with Arkansas next up on the schedule. Brandon Allen and the Razorbacks are averaging only 167.8 yards through the air this season. While wide receiver Keon Hatcher is capable of big plays, he only has 13 catches on the season and is the only real threat out wide for the Hogs.
  • 310.3. On the flip side, the Razorbacks are giving up more than 310 yards per game in their three contests against fellow Power 5 teams. That’s good news for Blake Sims, Amari Cooper and co. after a rough outing against a nasty Ole Miss defense. This weekend, Sims should be able to find the rhythm that he didn’t catch in Oxford.
  • 3. Other than special teams, one area that Alabama has been sloppy this season is holding onto the ball. They’ve already fumbled the ball away six times just five games into the season. Arkansas has only recovered three fumbles on the season, although they are recovering 50 percent of the balls that their opponents do put on the ground.

THE BAD

  • 6.9. Alabama have held Mississippi, a subpar running team, to 2.25 yards per carry last weekend. They’ll be hard-pressed to do that again against Arkansas. The Razorbacks pounds out 6.9 yards on each of their ridiculous 45.8 rushing attempts per game, led by the nearly unstoppable Alex Collins. That’ll certainly test an Alabama run defense that’s giving up less than 3 yards per carry this season.
  • 3. The Crimson Tide have missed three field goals over the last two games, all of them longer than 40 yards. That puts the offense in a tough spot, as Nick Saban must know that his offense will have to start going for it more often when they’re in that in-between zone, when they’re at the edge of field goal range but too close to make punting worth it.
  • 30.9. After Alabama’s struggles to contain Ole Miss’ kick return game last week, they’ll need to be on their toes against Arkansas. Led by running back Korliss Marshall, the Razorbacks average 30.9 yards per return, and Marshall has already broken one for a touchdown this season.
