The University of Alabama’s pro contingency got little smaller over the weekend as former All-American cornerback DeQuan Menzie apparently retired.

The Carolina Panthers released Menzie on Saturday, and on Sunday he tweeted the message “Officially done. …”

Beforehand, every starter from the 2011 Crimson Tide defense, which led the nation in each of the four major defensive statistical categories — pass-efficiency defense (83.69 rating), pass defense (111.46 yards per game), rushing defense (72.15), scoring defense (8.15 points), and total defense (183.62 yards per game) — was on an NFL roster for training camp.

Although he spent time with three different teams Menzie never played in an NFL game.

A fifth-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2012 NFL Draft (No. 146 overall), Menzie spent his initial season on the injured reserve and was eventually released. He was picked up by the Detroit Lions in May 2013, but cut near the end of camp.

The Panthers signed Menzie in January. Former Crimson Tide safeties Roman Harper and Robert Lester remain on the Carolina roster.

Meanwhile, former Alabama tight end Brad Smelley, who had been on the Houston Texans roster as a fullback, was released to make room for other signees last week.
