Alabama SGA cancels student blocks for 2020 Crimson Tide home games

SEC stadiums, including Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, will be at reduced capacity so that groups of fans are socially distanced inside the stadium. Socially distanced means no student blocks at Bryant-Denny Stadium this fall, Alabama’s Student Government Association confirmed with an executive order by President Demarcus Joiner saying the Board of Governors “will not hold a selection process for student organized block seating for the 2020 football season to protect the safety of students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the program will be suspended.”
Alabama SGA further addressed the matter in a Twitter thread, saying student blocks will return in 2021:
“Due to the recent in-stadium seating capacity announced by @UA_Athletics + with consideration of the public health of the student community, SGA Student Organized Block Seating has been canceled for the upcoming 2020 football season.
“The nature of student block seating requires an in-stadium capacity above the determined maximum, making the program unfeasible. SGA is saddened to suspend this program, but we encourage students to continue cheering on @AlabamaFTBL from a safe social distance.”
“SGA plans to resume Student Organized Block Seating for the 2021 @AlabamaFTBL season. We encourage student organizations to continue modeling the importance of COVID-19 prevention + mitigation measures for our campus.”
According to an AL.com report, student tickets will be divided based on classification. Seniors will get 40 percent of tickets followed by juniors (20 percent), sophomores (15 percent), freshman (15 percent) and graduate students (10 percent). The student tickets will be sold on a single-game basis for $20 each.
Alabama’s home opener is set for Oct. 3 against Texas A&M.
